The 120km/h two-car trains will accommodate 376 passengers and will be assembled at Alstom's Santa Perpetua plant near Barcelona. The contract includes options for an additional eight sets.

The five-year maintenance contract is worth $US 13m and is renewable for up to 30 years.

The emus will enter service in 2014 on Rancagua Xpress services, which will operate at 15-minute intervals in peak periods running non-stop from Santiago Central to Nós and calling at all remaining stations to Rancagua. The launch of the enhanced service will reduce journey times on the 21km section between Santiago Central and Nós to 15 minutes.
