Ridership on the line between The Hague Central and Slinge increased from around 10,000 passengers per day in 2006 to 39,000 per day in 2015, and RET says it expects the upward trend to continue.

RET is therefore acquiring extra rolling stock and investing €7m in infrastructure improvements to enable the operation of five-minute-interval peak services on Line E from 2017.

The order is an option from an initial contract for 22 of the 42.7m-long 100km/h trains (designated Type R), which were delivered to RET in 2008-2009.
