Stadler is due to deliver a first option for nine additional trains next month, and the 34 trains from the second option will be delivered between early 2016 and the second quarter of 2017.

The 80% low-floor four-car trains will seat 234 passengers and the generous Finnish loading gauge has allowed Stadler to use a 3.2m-wide bodyshell, which accommodates 3+2 seating.

Junakalusto was founded in 2004 and is jointly owned by national train operator VR Group, which has a 5% share and the cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen, which hold the remaining 65% stake. The company buys and maintains rolling stock on behalf of Helsinki Regional Transport (HRT), which operates suburban train services in the Finnish capital.

The order takes the total number of Flirts sold by Stadler to 1018 sets.
