The contract includes options for 20 additional trains and maintenance of the fleet.

The signing of the contract had been delayed after Stadler contested the decision to award the order to Pesa.

Trenitalia has not disclosed where the trains will be used, although 10 sets will operate in Tuscany under a contract signed by Trenitalia and the regional government in November 2012.

A total of 41 ATR 220s are already in service with three Italian regional operators: South East Railways (27 trains), North Milan Railways (two trains) and Emilia Romagna Railways (12 trains).
