The powerpack utilise MTU’s 12V 1600 R80L 12-cylinder diesel engine and Rolls-Royce says the engines offer a high-power density, low consumption and low emissions. Specifically, a built-in SCR unit ensures they meet EU Stage IIIB emissions legislation.

The bi-mode trains will also be able to operate in electric mode using catenary and are similar to the class 800 and 801 trains built by Hitachi under Britain’s Intercity Express Programme (IEP), for which Rolls Royce is providing 330 powerpacks.
