Sensors in the head of the pantograph constantly monitor infrastructure and provide data which can be used to determine maintenance requirements for rolling stock and electrification equipment.

Brecknell Willis has developed a prototype of the pantograph in collaboration with City University London, with funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
