DEMAN, Belgium, has designed and supplied a batch of custom lifting beams to Belgian National Railways (SNCB) to simplify handling of roof panels on its fleet of Siemens class 18 electric locomotives during maintenance.

SNCB faced a challenge because all of the roof panels are different, with variation in lifting point positions and the centre of gravity for each type of panel. SNCB tried using standard lifting beams, but found it was not possible to handle the panels safely in this manner. Lifting with chains was also evaluated, but this method did not allow horizontal handling.

SNCB therefore commissioned Deman to design and build an adjustable beam, which enables the centre of gravity to be positioned directly under the crane hook. According to Deman, the ability to manually adjust the beam optimises the handling position for each roof panel type and ensures smooth installation on the locomotive, reducing the risk of damage and speeding up maintenance.
