The Variotram LRVs were manufactured by Adtranz in Dandenong, Victoria, in 1996 and entered service in Sydney in 1997 with the opening of the Sydney light rail system.
The bidirectional vehicles are 29m long and 2.65m wide with a cab at each end and can accommodate 217 passengers, with 74 seated. The low-floor vehicles have an access height of 290mm above the rail.

The 80km/h LRVs can achieve a maximum acceleration of 1.2m/s2, and are capable of negotiating a maximum gradient of 8.5%. The articulated design allows for a wide body vehicle without over-swing on curves.

The standard-gauge Variotrams are air-conditioned and operate on lines electrified at 750V dc.
