The order is an option from a contract for 350 vehicles, which was awarded to AnsaldoBreda in 2010. Trenitialia exercised an initial option worth €300m for 150 additional coaches in 2013, when it also ordered 29 E464 electric locomotives from Bombardier.

The latest tranche of 70 vehicles will be built at AnsaldoBreda plants in Pistoia and Reggio Calabria and the order comprises 56 intermediate and 14 driving cars. Each intermediate coach will seat 126 passengers and the coaches will be formed into sets of five or six vehicles, operating in push-pull mode with 160km/h E464 locomotives.

Trenitalia now has one remaining option in the contract for 30 more Vivaltos.
