The agreement was signed on November 7 by the Tuscan minister of regional transport Mr Luca Ceccobao and Mr Vincenzo Soprano CEO of Trenitalia, which will operate with the new rolling stock.
The new trains will be delivered by the end of next year and will operate on six routes:
- Lucca - Aulla,
- Florence - Borgo San Lorenzo - Faenza via Vaglia
- Florence - Borgo San Lorenzo via Pontassieve
- Grosseto - Siena - Empoli
- Chiusi - Siena, and
- Cecina - Saline di Volterra.
The regional government commissioned Trenitalia to identify a suitable supplier for the order, although only two bids were received. Pesa, which has already supplied dmus to the regions of Emilia-Romagna, Lombardia, and Puglia, was the only bidder to provide the necessary documentation on time with the correct technical specifications.
The dmus will supplement the fleet of 30 Vivalto push-pull sets, which have been ordered by Trenitalia with the aid of a €150m investment by the regional government. The trains will enter service on electrified lines in 2014.
