The new trains will consist of four cars compared with six on the existing sets and will be able to operate in multiple. Delivery is set to take place in 2017 and Westbahn will employ 150 more staff for its expanded service.

Westbahn is set to offer extra Vienna – Salzburg services from December 2017, from Vienna Main Station in addition to its services from Vienna West. Haselsteiner says that if Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) increases the frequency of its Vienna - Salzburg services Westbahn will look to employ its EMUs on other Austrian services such as Vienna - Graz/Villach, Vienna - Bregenz or Salzburg - Villach.

Rail Holding increased its stock capital in Westbahn to €36.5m to cover part of the investment not supported by co-owner SNCF Voyages. Haselsteiner now holds a 49.9% stake in the company with August Holding accounting for 32.7% while SNCF's share has fallen from 28% to 17.4%.

Westbahn transported 4.5 million passengers in 2014 and reports a positive cash flow. However, its earnings are behind its original forecast due to competition from discount fares offered by ÖBB.
