The system will be installed on two new lines: Valladolid - Venta de Baños - León and Venta de Baños - Burgos. The contract covers signalling, fixed telecommunications, GSM-R communications, automatic train protection, centralised traffic control, safety equipment, on-board equipment, and infrastructure for mobile phone operators.
Construction of the Venta de Baños - Burgos line was suspended last year due to funding problems, but work resumed towards the end of the year. The suspension of work means that the line is unlikely to open in 2015 as originally planned.
Alstom says this will be the second ERTMS Level 2 deployment in Spain without ETCS Level 1 backup, after the installation on the Albacete - Alicante high-speed line.
