Atkins will be responsible for upgrading signalling between Truro and St Erth as part of the Cornwall Capacity Enabling Scheme (CCES), which will facilitate the operation of half-hourly services between Plymouth and Penzance per hour.
Atkins will be responsible for Governance of Railway Investment Projects (Grip) stages 4b-8, comprising the design, construction, installation, testing, commissioning and entry into the service before the December 2018 timetable change.
The project includes installation of 12 new intermediate block signals, six Miniature Stop Light Crossings and a manually controlled barrier crossing with obstacle detection. In the second phase of CCES 10 manual signalboxes will be eliminated.
“A range of in-house disciplines will be deployed, including signalling and telecommunications, power supplies, permanent way and civil engineering services, to implement 12 new signals and upgrade seven level crossings,” says senior project manager of transportation at Atkins, Mr Stephen Mills.
