The six-year contract covers detailed design, supervision, testing and commissioning of the new system on both the infrastructure and the fleet of 43 type M7 trains which are being supplied by CAF, Spain.

The French subsidiary of Ansaldo STS was awarded an €88m contract in 2016 to install CBTC on the two lines as part of a phased project which seeks to reduce peak headways from 2 minutes 30 seconds to less than two minutes.

The consortium will also assist with the construction of a new depot at Erasme at the western terminus of Line 5. The depot is due to be completed in mid-2018 in time for the delivery of the first trains.

Lines 1 and 5 are the busiest on the Brussels metro network. The east-west lines share a common section through the city centre between Merode and West station.
