Siemens will install CBTC on the final section of the Singapore Downtown Line. Siemens will install CBTC on the final section of the Singapore Downtown Line.

SINGAPORE’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a €90m contract to Siemens to install communications-based train control (CBTC) for the 2.2km extension to the Downtown Line 3 from Expo to Sungei Bedok.

Siemens will supply its Trainguard Sirius CBTC, an automated train protection and operation system, which will guarantee driverless Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) operation, in common with the rest of the 42km line which Siemens has already equipped. In case of an incident, the CBTC is able to maintain safe train operation thanks to a backup mode based on a speed-codes Automated Train Protection (ATP) system.

The contract includes two new stations and a depot, as well as platform screen doors. When the extension is completed in 2024, it will provide a connection with the 43km Thomson-East Coast Line, currently under construction, at Sungei Bedok.

The east-west Downtown Line transports up to 500,000 passengers per day and currently runs from Bukit Panjang in west via a loop through the Central Business District to Expo in the east.
