The project is part of the modernisation and electrification of the Great Western Main Line in preparation for the introduction of new Intercity Express Programme trains from Hitachi.

Covering 153 signalling equivalent units, Siemens will decommission all life-expired relay interlockings, and systems will be replaced by Siemens Trackguard Westlock electronic interlocking.

Control will be transferred from the NX Panel at Port Talbot to a new Siemens Controlguide Westcad control desk at the Wales Rail Operating Centre (WROC) in Cardiff.

Conventional track circuits for track detection will be replaced by axle counters controlled through trackside functional modules (TFMs), and updated additional power supplies will be bought into service.
