MILAN Metro operator ATM and French consultants Egis have been awarded a €250m 11-year contract by Elliniko Metro to operate and maintain the new automated metro line under construction in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Greek prime minister, Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the CEOs of Elliniko Metro, Mr Nikolaos Kouretas, and ATM, Mr Arrigo Giana, and the CEO, consulting and operations, of Egis, Mr Renaud Béziade.

ATM and Egis have formed the Thema Consortium for the contract in which ATM has a 51% stake and Egis the remaining 49%.

Construction of the first metro line in Thessaloniki has suffered from years of false starts and delays due mainly to the Greek financial crisis and the discovery of archaeological remains.

The first 14.4km section with 13 stations will open in the fourth quarter of 2024 between New Railway Station in the north and Nea Elvetia in the south. A branch from 25 Martiou to Mikra with five stations will open later.

The metro will be operated with a fleet of 18 trains initially, increasing to 33 trains when the Mikra branch opens. The depot and control and operations centre are located in the Pylea area.
