The manufacturer will be responsible for the development, manufacture, delivery, authorisation and the placing into service of the trains, and will also be awarded a separate 16-year contract to undertake corrective and preventive maintenance at VMS’ facilities. This contract includes two eight year extensions.
The tender requires a base order of 19 vehicles, with the first two prototypes delivered by the end of 2024. The remaining vehicles will be delivered in 2025.
The tender also includes an option for up to 27 vehicles, which must be exercised by 2035. 17 vehicles in the option will be the same as the base order, while the remaining 10 must be compatible with the base order.
MVS, which will own the vehicles, will release a tender to operate regional services using the tram-trains under the Chemnitz model, which combines both light rail services with services on the conventional network.
The tram-trains will be 37.5m-long, with at least 80 seats and multi-purpose areas for passengers with reduced mobility, bicycles, pushchairs and wheelchairs. The tram-trains must be able to operate in multiple, with variable access to match 380mm and 550mm platform heights, and must be suitable for operation on both 600V-750V dc and 15kV 16.7Hz ac electrification.
