ETIHAD Rail has signed a strategic partnership with Western Bainoona Group to transport construction materials for the group from their facilities in Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman to industrial hubs in Dubai Industrial City (DIC) and Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD).

The agreement envisages the transport of 4.5 million tonnes of aggregate on 643 trains annually. The 1000m-long trains will have an approximate capacity of 7000 tonnes and are expected to reduce road traffic by 120,000 lorry trips annually.

Work continues to construct Etihad Rail’s facilities in ICAD and DIC, which will offer advanced logistics capabilities to the two cities. Phase 2 of the Etihad Rail network will run from Fujairah west via Dubai and Abu Dhabi to Ghuweifat on the border with Saudi Arabia. Construction on various construction packages is progressing and together with the 264km phase one from Shah to Ruwais, the project will extend the network to 1200km.

“Etihad Rail delivers cost-effective and time-efficient transport solutions, reducing road traffic in the UAE,” says Mr Mohamed Al Marzooqi, executive director of the Rail Relations Sector at Etihad Rail. “In doing so, we protect the environment by reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, we deliver significant benefits for the logistics, infrastructure, and transport sectors across the UAE.”
