The 8km link will branch off the Halmstad – Gothenburg line in the district of Almedal, looping beneath the city centre in a 6km tunnel before emerging to rejoin the existing network east of Gothenburg central station. The project will include new underground stations at Korsvägen, Haga, and Gothenburg Central.

Trafikverket says it expects the environmental impact statement for the project to be approved by the provincial government by the autumn before the review of the rail plan for the project, which is scheduled for December. Construction is expected to start in 2017 or 2018 and the link will be commissioned in 2026.
