The double-track extension utilises the existing Turkish State Railways (TCDD) line from Izmir to Torbali and includes six stations, which are served by 76 services per day in each direction, with trains operating between 05.25 and 23.55. The line is equipped with 25kV 50Hz ac electrification.

The extension increases the total length of the Izban network to 112km and is expected to bring 20,000 additional passengers per day onto the system, increasing overall ridership to more than 300,000 passengers per day.

The first 23km phase of the Southern Line opened in 2010, linking an underground terminus at Alsancak in the city centre with Menderes Airport and Cumaovasi.
