Macedonia awards Corridor 10 upgrade contract
MACEDONIAN Railways (MZ) has awarded Austrian civil engineering company Alpine and its German joint-venture partner H F Wiebe, a Euros 7m contract to rebuild two sections of Trans European network (TEN) Corridor 10 totalling 26.4km of the north-south main line connecting Nis in Serbia to Thessaloniki in Greece.
The project is being financed through a Euros 17.6m loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which includes Euros 2.9m for modernisation of the main station in the Macedonian capital Skopje (pictured) and Euros 3m for the upgrading of eight other stations.
MZ is planning further work to upgrade other sections of Corridor 10 in Macedonia and is evaluating the installation of ERTMS.
