The €145m project represents the third phase of the so-called Erdinger Ringschluss, which aims to fill missing links in the Erding area to improve rail connections between southeastern and northeastern Bavaria via Munich Airport.

Phase 1 of the Erdinger Ringschluss involves building a 4km extension from the existing terminus station at the airport to Schwaigerloh. Phase 2 will extend the line south to Altenerding on Munich S-Bahn Line S2. This phase involves the construction of a new underground station in Erding with two S-Bahn platforms and one platform for regional services from Salzburg and Mühldorf to Munich Airport.

The third phase involves constructing a 9km electrified link between Erding and a junction with the Munich - Mühldorf line between Walpertskirchen and Thann-Matzbach stations.

The third phase was classified as a priority project in the November 2018 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan and therefore qualifies for federal funding.

The Munich Airport - Schwaigerloh section is expected to open in 2024, with Schwaigerloh - Erding due for completion in 2027 and Erding - Altenerding in 2029.

Last December the opening of the 2.3km Neufahrn Curve gave Munich Airport a regional rail link to the north with direct services to Landshut and Regensburg.
