THE Queensland State Government has short-listed Alstom, CAF and Downer Rail to manufacture the first 20 EMUs of the government’s Rolling Stock Expansion Programme (REP).
The government has committed $A 600m ($US 448m) for the first 20 trains from the 65-train programme, which will be manufactured at a purpose-built facility in Maryborough, 265km north of Brisbane.
In addition, the state Department of Transport and Main Roads has allocated $A 1m for a business case to manufacture replacement coaches for three iconic long distance services: Westlander, Inlander and Spirit of the Outback.
Mr Mark Bailey, transport and main roads minister, says the initiative will deliver a $A 1bn guaranteed pipeline of train building work in Maryborough. The funding for both projects was allocated in the Queensland state budget agreed in December.
