RCCH plans to launch its own regular services to Switzerland and through to Domodossola in Italy from mid-2013, according to CEO Mr Paul Schumacher. RheinCargo has been offering railfreight services in Switzerland for the last ten years in partnership with Swiss operators.

RheinCargo was created earlier this year by the merger of the port and rail transport activities of Cologne Ports and Freight (HGK) and Neuss-Düsseldorf Port. RheinCargo is owned by local governments in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Neuss, and operates a fleet of 77 locomotives and more than 600 wagons. The operator carries around 20 million tonnes of freight by rail per year.
