Line 2 links Science Park in the northwest of the city with the main station and Kuhberg in the southwest.

The opening also marked the completion of operator SWU Verkehr’s order from Siemens for 12 articulated Avenio M trams, the first Avenio fleet equipped with the “Siemens Tram Assistant” collision warning system, which will be used on lines 1 and 2. The first trams from the order were delivered on April 21.

The collision warning system alerts the tram driver of critical situations with the help of lidar and radar sensors, helping to avoid accidents.

The €155m line was partially funded with a €65m grant from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). The line is expected to carry 8300 passengers a day, taking 5500 cars off the road.

“With the commissioning of the transport project after three years of construction, today we take a big step towards a sustainable mobile city,” says Baden-Württemberg’s minister of transport, Mr Winfried Hermann.
