The conversion work is the first stage of a 28-month programme to replace analogue radio equipment on 840 S-Train and mainline vehicles with GSM-R under a €20m contract awarded to Siemens by infrastructure manager Banedanmark last year.

Voice communication via GSM-R will be operational on all trains by November 2014, and GSM-R operation will be extended to cover train control functions by 2015.

The installation of onboard GSM-R equipment is a key part of Banedanmark's national resignalling programme, which will see the S-Train network equipped with CBTC by 2018 and all mainlines converted to ETCS Level 2 by 2020.
