Covering the entire underground section between the Royal Oak, Pudding Mill Lane and Plumstead portals, ATC will install more than 41km of track, rigid 25kV overhead conductor rails, 48 ventilation fans, 40km of walkways, and 66 drainage pumps, together with fire mains supplies and lighting.

Fitting out is due to start next year and the works will require more than 50,000m3 of concrete, which will be delivered by a specially-equipped train.

Construction of the tunnels began with the launch of the first TBM at the Royal Oak portal in May 2012, and Crossrail says 7km of tunnel has been constructed so far. Tunnelling work is due to be completed by the end of next year.

  • Network Rail issued an invitation to tender on March 28 for a contract to carry out most of the Crossrail works on the northeast surface section of the route between Stratford and Shenfield. Balfour Beatty, Costain, Hochtief, and VolkerFitzpatrick have prequalified for the tender, which will cover station improvements, platform extensions, and the construction of additional stabling and turnback facilities. Detailed design will begin early next year and the works are due to be completed in 2017.
