KiwiRail is increasing capacity on the North Island between Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, the country's second busiest container port.

New passing loops are being laid at Tamihana and the Apata loop is being lengthened from 650m to 1100m to permit longer trains. When the work is completed at the end of the year the number of trains per hour will double to four.
