The section will be the first stage of the modernisation of the 287km Serbian section of the Belgrade – Bar (Montenegro) project, and will be the first upgrade to the line in more than 40 years.

Reconstruction encompasses renewals and refurbishment of the roadbed, track structures, two tunnels and 17 bridges, electrification, signalling and telecommunications system, as well as maintenance of infrastructure facilities along the railway, including 10 stations.

The maximum speed for passenger trains will increase from 50km/h to 120km/h. Work on the Resnik – Valjevo section will begin in June 2018 and the contract is valued at $US 80m.
