Indian Railways to boost spending and investment

THE 2012-13 railway budget, presented by railway minister Mr Dinesh Trivedi in the Indian parliament today, calls for total spending of Rs 601bn ($US 12.3bn), which Trivedi says is the highest ever. But capital investment during the 12th five-year plan, which runs from this year to 2017, will more than treble from Rs 1.92 trillion during the 11th five-year plan to Rs 7.35 trillion.

 
Alstom wins Singapore trackwork contract
SINGAPORE's Land Transport Authority has awarded Alstom a €40m contract to complete trackwork on the 7.5km Tuas West extension of the East-West metro line.
 
HKX appoints Veolia to operate its new German open-access service

HAMBURG-Köln-Express (HKX), which plans to launch an open-access passenger service between Hamburg and Cologne, has appointed Veolia as its operator. Under the deal, Veolia will provide four Siemens ES 64 U2 electric locomotives to haul six-car rakes of HKX coaches. Veolia will also provide the drivers, train HKX staff, and maintain the locomotives and coaches.

 
Betuweroute railfreight traffic increases 30% in 2011

TRAFFIC on the Betuweroute, the dedicated freight line from Rotterdam to the German border near Emmerich, increased by 30% in 2011 to 23,000 trains.

 
Russian Railways reconstructs Moscow’s main stations

MORE than Roubles 7bn ($US 240.3m) is to be invested this year by Russian Railways (RZD) to modernise stations in the Moscow area. Of this, Roubles 4.3bn will be spent on Moscow's main stations.

 
Thales to install CBTC on Sin Bundang metro
HYUNDAI Rotem has awarded Thales a contract to supply communications-based train control CBTC on the 12km extension of the Sin Bundang metro line from Jeongia to Gwanggyo, near Seoul.
 
KTMB’s new emus enter service
MALAYAN Railways (KTMB) launched the first four of 38 new six-car emus into service on March 8. The trains, which are being built by CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive, have capacity for 1200 passengers, which is double that of the current three-car fleet.
 
CSR Zhuzhou lowest bidder for Ankara metro cars
CSR subsidiary, CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Company, has reportedly submitted the lowest priced bid to supply trains for the Ankara metro following a tender on March 5.
 
Zimbabwe forecasts improving prospects for railfreight
NATIONAL Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) says it expects to move six million tonnes of freight this year, a substantial increase on the 3.8 million tonnes carried in 2011.

 

 
Britain seeks to reduce rail industry costs
BRITAIN will seek to reduce the cost of operating its railway network by up to £3.5bn per year by the end of the decade under plans unveiled yesterday by the transport secretary Mrs Justine Greening. The command paper, entitled Reforming our Railways: Putting the Customer First is the government's response to the Sir Roy McNulty's Rail Value for Money study published last year, which identified inefficiencies of £2.5-3.5bn.
 
SBB Cargo commissions first hybrid shunting locomotive
A ceremony was held today at Limmattal marshalling yard near Zurich to mark the entry into service of SBB Cargo's first hybrid shunting locomotive. The Eem 923 locomotive, which was christened Heitern after a mountain near the yard, is the first of 30 1.5MW units being supplied by Stadler Winterthur, Switzerland, under a SFr 88m (95.9m) contract.
 
KiwiRail boosts revenue, but profit drops
NEW ZEALAND's state-owned railway KiwiRail says it achieved a 5% increase in revenue to $NZ 350m ($US 288m) in the six months to December 31 2011, compared with the same period in 2010. Revenue from its core freight operations jumped 11% to over $220m.
 
Bumper year for MTR
REVENUES at MTR increased 13.2% to $HK 33.42bn in 2011, with its Hong Kong operations accounting for $HK 21.14bn of this, a 9.1% increase on 2010, as passenger numbers increased by 5.1% to 1.69 billion on its rail and bus services, excluding inter-city.
 
Booming international business drives up CAF profits
CONTINUING success in international markets helped CAF to boost its profits by 13% last year to Euros 146.2m, according to the latest financial results released by the Spanish rolling stock manufacturer.

First RZD Desiro emu shipped to Russia
SIEMENS has despatched the first five-car Desiro Rus emu for Russian Railways (RZD) to the Russian port of Ust Luga using the 1520mm-gauge train ferry from Sassnitz Mukran on Germany's Baltic coast.
 
Chilean passenger traffic reaches record high
CHILEAN State Railways (EFE) claims to have carried more passengers in 2011 than in any previous year in its 127-year history, according to the latest figures released by the railway. The total came in at almost 27 million, more than 90% of which were carried on just two suburban lines, MetroTren in Santiago, and Merval in Valparaíso.
