LA Metro Gold Line constructor granted notice to proceed
THE extension of Los Angeles' light rail Gold Line from Pasadena to Azusa took a major step forward yesterday when the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority issued the Kiewit Parsons Joint Venture full notice to proceed with the $US 486 million full construction phase of the project.
 
Atkins secures preliminary design contract for Britain’s HS2
HS2, the company overseeing the project to build a high-speed line between London, Birmingham and northern England, has awarded Atkins a £13.3m contract to prepare preliminary designs for the County South section of the line which will run 91km through the counties of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire.
 
CSR Zhuzhou to supply Wuxi Metro Line 1 trains
CSR Zhuzhou has been awarded a contract to supply 23 six-car Type B trains for the first metro line in Wuxi, a city of 6.3 million inhabitants in China's eastern Jiangsu province.
 
BLS Cargo returns to pre-recession performance
DESPITE a challenging and eventful 2011, marked by a strong Swiss franc, fluctuations in freight volumes and problems with infrastructure bottlenecks, especially on Switzerland's Lötschberg route, BLS Cargo says its annual results released on April 4 show that it has almost recovered from the economic crisis of 2009.
 
Auckland commuter extension completed

DB orders 42 emus for North Rhine-Westphalia
GERMAN Rail (DB) subsidiary DB Regio NRW has placed orders worth a total of Euros 215m with two manufacturers for 42 emus, which will operate suburban and regional services in the state of the North Rhine-Westphalia.


 
Alstom wins SNCF TGV order and drops legal action against Eurostar

THE chairman and CEO of Alstom, Mr Patrick Kron has announced that French National Railways (SNCF) has signed a contract for 40 additional Euroduplex double-deck TGVs, while at the same time confirming that Alstom has dropped it legal action against Eurostar, in which SNCF is the majority shareholder, over a tender in 2009 for high-speed trains to operate through the Channel Tunnel.

 
New coaches inaugurated as Pakistan steps up repairs
PAKISTAN's federal minister for railways, Mr Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, inaugurated 14 new coaches added to the Karachi - Lahore Karakoram Express service at Karachi Cantonment station on March 30. These are part of new fleet of 55 coaches recently imported by CNR Changchun, China, the first tranche of an overall order placed in 2011 by Pakistan Railways (PR) for 202 Chinese-built coaches.
 
CNR’s first Rio emu enters service
THE first four-car emu manufactured for Rio de Janeiro's suburban operator SuperVia by CNR Changchun, China, has entered service on the city's suburban network following a commemorative ceremony held on March 20.
 
Services cease on northern Jutland railway after bridge accident
SERVICES have ceased on the line to northern Jutland in Denmark after a 75m-long Finnish freight ship collided with a bridge in Aalborg on Wednesday night just minutes before an inter-city train was due to cross it.
 
NTV to launch Italian high-speed services on April 28

THE world's first open-access high-speed rail operator, NTV, has announced the launch date for its new Italo service. Trains will start running on April 28 on the Milan - Florence - Rome - Naples route. Services will be gradually expanded as NTV's fleet of 25 AGV trains, being supplied by Alstom, becomes available so that by the end of the year services will run to Turin, Venice and Salerno.

 
SBB profits leap 13.5% in 2011
SWISS Federal Railways (SBB) recorded a net profit of SFr 338.7m ($US 378.3m) last year, a 13.5% increase on 2010. Revenues were up by 3.4% to SFr 8bn, while Ebit was up 24.2% to SFr 529.7m. These positive results were recorded despite a 26.9% drop in passenger traffic revenues to SFr 213.9m, although passenger numbers increased by 2.7% to 356.6 million.
 
Portugal abandons high-speed rail project

PORTUGAL'S Ministry of Economy has announced the construction of a high-speed line between Lisbon and the Spanish border will be "definitively abandoned" following a report by the country's audit commission, which claims contracts awarded for the Poceirão - Caia section were illegal.

 
Three British franchises attract 13 prospective bidders
THE British government has shortlisted 13 prequalified bidders for three rail franchises which will be awarded in 2013 in what it describes as the biggest programme of refranchising since the network was privatised in the 1990s.
 
DB's new 2020 strategy aims to double turnover

THE CEO of German Rail (DB) Dr Rüdiger Grube announced DB's strategy for 2020 in Berlin today. The objective is to double turnover to Euros 70bn, compared with the situation in 2010, and to invest Euros 86bn over the next nine years, of which Euros 34bn will come from its own resources. This represents an average annual investment of Euros 9.55 billion, which equates to a 26.7% increase compared with 2011.

 
SNCF to launch six-point travel guarantee

FRENCH National Railways (SNCF) is to introduce on March 31 a six-point guarantee for passengers using its TGV and Intercity services. The travel guarantee is designed to meet SNCF's ambition to be "the reference" for customer relations and the first European transport operator to guarantee its services. The six commitments are based on recommendations by France's National Consumers Association.

 
Green to launch counterattack in battle for CP

THE president and CEO of Canadian Pacific Railway (CP), Mr Fred Green, will today mount a counterattack against a campaign to oust him by Mr Bill Ackman, CEO of a US hedge fund called Pershing Square Capital Management which has a 14.2% shareholding in CP. Ackman believes CP is under-performing - its operating ratio of 81.3% is the worst of the six North American Class 1 railways - and he wants to replace Green with former Canadian National CEO, Mr Hunter Harrison.

 
Network Rail selects four ETCS development partners

BRITAIN's infrastructure manager, Network Rail (NR), has agreed framework deals with Ansaldo STS, Infrasig, Invensys Rail, and Signalling Solutions to develop and design ETCS Level 2 signalling and train control for use in Britain.
