Arriva confirmed in a statement that it had received an unsolicited
approach from a third party about a possible offer for the company, but
declined to name the bidder. The announcement boosted Arriva shares 12%
to their highest level since November 2008.

Arriva ended early stage talks with SNCF over a potential merger with Keolis two weeks ago.

Arriva operates Britain's Cross Country, Merseyrail and Arriva Trains
Wales franchises. The company also has regional concessions in the
Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden. In Germany, Arriva owns Prignitzer
Eisenbahn and Regentalbahn, and has an 86% stake in East Hanover
Railway (OHE), the majority shareholder in regional rail operator
Metronom.
