BRITISH infrastructure manager, Network Rail (NR), has awarded the final two contracts in the project to redevelop London Bridge station as part of the Thameslink programme. Costain has won a £400m contract for station redevelopment and Balfour Beatty Rail will deliver the £50m track remodelling project.

The station redevelopment includes constructing a new concourse at street-level and two new entrances which will allow the station to boost its capacity by 66% from today's levels. Access to the station will also be transformed, with Costain set to design the new layout as part of the contract.

The track remodelling work that Balfour Beatty will carry out is essential to allow longer trains to use the station and for it to cope with increased capacity. The new simplified layout will also help to improve the reliability of the station's existing services.

"The Thameslink programme allows the tracks, platform and station layout at London Bridge to be completely re-designed, boosting the number of trains that can run, unblocking the bottleneck and providing a modern and dynamic station which will be a real improvement for passengers," says Mr Simon Kirby, NR managing director of investment projects.
