Because of the high density of traffic on the 18km Al Mashaaer Al
Mugaddassah Southern Metro, which will link Mina with Muzdalifah and
Arafat, there will be eight powered vehicles in each train, providing
capacity for up to 3000 passengers.

The line will open on November 13 in time for the Hajj, and will
initially operate at around 35% capacity. Driverless operation will
commence in the middle of next year and the line will operate at its
full design capacity of 72,000 passengers per direction per hour by the
2011 Hajj, when trains will run in convoys of three at 90-second
headways during peak periods.

Around three million pilgrims visit Mecca during the week of the Hajj, the largest annual pilgrimage in the world.
