THE United States Federal Transit Administration has given its final approval to Los Angeles' plan for a $US 1.27bn light rail line along Crenshaw Boulevard.

The 13.7km line will run from a junction with the Expo Line to join the Green Line near Los Angeles International Airport, serving the districts of Leimert Park, Hyde Park, and Inglewood.

The decision gives Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) clearance to acquire property, purchase rolling stock, and divert utilities. LACMTA has already issued a request for prequalification from companies interested in bidding for contracts to design, engineer, and build the line.
