STADLER is celebrating the sale of its 700th Flirt emu, after Italian operator South Tirol Transport (STA) exercised an option for eight additional six-car regional trains from a contract originally signed in 2008. The Euros 75m contract includes eight intermediate cars to lengthen the original fleet of eight trains to six cars.

The 160km/h emus will seat 260 passengers and will be equipped to operate on both the Italian 3kV dc and Austrian 15kV electrification systems. All eight sets will be delivered in the second half of 2013.

sudtirol-flirt.jpgStadler has now sold 115 trains to Italian customers, excluding those which operate into Italy on Tilo cross-border regional services, which are owned by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).

The first Flirt emu was delivered in 2004, and the train has since been ordered by operators in Switzerland, Austria, France, Germany, Norway, Italy, Poland, Algeria, Finland, Hungary, Belarus, Estonia, and the Czech Republic.
