The 2.7km extension includes three new stations and is expected to boost ridership on Line 1 to around 185,000 passengers per day. Services are operated by a fleet of 40m-long Alstom Citadis low-floor LRVs.

The initial 7.3km section of Line 1 from Bordj El Kiffan to Mokhtar Zerhouni opened in May 2011 and the second 9.1km phase from Mokhtar Zerhouni to Les Fusillés was inaugurated in June 2012. Services began on the third phase from Bordj El Kiffan to Kahouat Echergui in April 2014.

Further expansion of the light rail and metro networks is planned as part of the Algiers Urban Development Plan (PDAU).
