Closing date for tenders is September 2 and BR says it is not bound to accept the lowest bid or indeed any tender offer.

BR embarked on a plan in 2006 to reduce its reliance on dwindling transit freight traffic by turning itself into a bulk freight railway by focussing on export traffic. In December BR acquired a fleet of 160 salt wagons from South Africa. BR hopes to be able to tap into the potential traffic from the country's considerable coal reserves and recently ran a test train (IRJ July p27).
