The priority project is likely to be an extension west from Sandton, which will run underground to Randberg before continuing at grade to Honeydew. Other options being considered as part of ITMP25 include a branch off the line to Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport from Rhodesfield to East Rand Mall and Boksburg, and a short underground extension from Park station in Braamfontein to Westgate in central Johannesburg.

In addition to the Gautrain extensions, ITMP25 proposes the development of a new east-west commuter rail line from Mamelodi to Samrand, Ruimsig, and Naledi, a distance of around 90km. Construction of this line would be phased, starting with the Ruimsig – Samrand section.

Gautrain says the intention is to have ITMP25 approved by the provincial government and local authorities by the end of the year. Once the plan has been approved, further studies will be carried out into the extensions and proposals will be drawn up for the funding framework and implementation schedule.
