The fleet of eight-car trains was ordered by Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), an agency of Egypt’s Ministry of Transport, under a Won 433.3bn ($US 352m) contract in 2017. The contract includes maintenance of the vehicles for eight years.
Egypt’s Ministry of Strategy and Finance and the Export-Import Bank of Korea supported a financial package composed of the Foreign Economic Cooperation Fund (EDCF) and export funds.
Hyundai Rotem says it plans to deliver all the trains by 2023. These will be first metro trains in Cairo to have inter-car gangways. Each 80km/h train will have room for 1740 passengers.
The 17.7km phase three extension will extend Line 3 from Attaba west to Kit Kat Square where the line will split, with a northern branch running via Embaba to Rod El-Farag and a southern branch serving Cairo University. Phase four will add another 11km to Line 3 and extend it to Cairo International Airport.
