This marks the next step in the completion of Phase 2A of Kenya’s standard-gauge railway project and follows the official opening of the 120km Phase 2A section from Nairobi to Naivasha on October 16. Phase 1 of the project, the 472km line from Mombasa to Nairobi, opened on May 31 2017.
KR says the new terminal at Naivasha will reduce congestion at Nairobi inland container terminal, improve hinterland connectivity and spur economic growth.
“Freight destined for the western part of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo will now be delivered straight to the Naivasha Inland Container Depot (ICD),” KR says. “Customers will pick their freight from Naivasha ICD instead of coming all the way to the Nairobi ICD.
“With this development, we have taken freight closer to the customer. It will reduce the number of trucks on the highway between Naivasha and Nairobi. Naivasha ICD also increases Kenya’s cargo handling capacity.”
