The upgrading includes the installation of a new paint booth designed to use environmentally friendly paints, the upgrading of the test bench and the assembly and logistics areas, as well as the installation of new overhead cranes.

A new training centre has also been set up, and MTU South Africa staff have also received intensive training.

MTU was awarded a contract in January 2015 to supply a total of 232 20-cylinder Series 4000 R63L engines, with a power output of 3.3MW, for use in TFR’s new fleet of class 45 locomotives.

Most of the locomotives will be assembled in Durban in South Africa where MTU will deliver its engines for installation in the vehicles. TFR and MTU are currently planning further joint projects.
