A new rail freight service linking Maputo Port in Mozambique with three major Zimbabwean trade hubs has begun operating.
Unitrans Africa is operating the service in partnership with National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM) and Traxtion. The latter is providing Stadler Afro4000 diesel locomotives for the train, which runs from the port to hubs in Harare, Bulawayo and Gweru. Traxtion purchased seven Afro4000 at auction from Prasa, South Africa.
The aim of the new service is to offer an enhanced connection for importers and exporters to use Maputo’s multi-purpose deep-water port, connecting customers with global trade partners and vice-versa.
Unitrans also claims that the service underscores its commitment to driving sustainable growth within the sub-Saharan African region. The organisation states it is focussing on accelerating growth and opportunities on the continent using public private partnerships (PPP) and says this train is testament to that.
“As well as promoting new trade opportunities for customers in both Zimbabwe and Maputo, this dedicated rail service will reduce transit times, cut costs and offer a more reliable service,” says Unitrans CEO, Mr Rob Hayworth.
