Construction began on the initial 14.3km section of Line T1 in June 2013, with Turkish construction company Yapi Merkezi carrying out civil works.

Services are operated by a fleet of 34 seven-section Alstom Citadis low-floor LRVs. The 43.7m-long vehicles were assembled by Cital, a joint venture of Alstom, Algiers Metro Company (EMA), Ferrovial, and Algerian National Railways (SNTF), at its facility in Annaba.
