ALMOST three-and-a-half years after it was selected as preferred bidder to finance, supply, and maintain Britain's next-generation long-distance train, Agility Trains, a consortium of Hitachi and John Laing Investments, and the Department for Transport (DfT) have reached financial close on the first phase of the £4.5bn Intercity Express Programme.
Rumo Logistics, a subsidiary of Brazil's Cosan group, has placed two orders worth a total of Reais 41m ($US 20m) for 200 sugar and ethanol wagons. The acquisition is part of Rumo's Reais 1.3 billion strategy to boost rail-borne sugar and grain volumes to 11 million tonnes by 2014.

GE Transportation has rolled out the 5000th Evolution Series locomotive to be built since the platform was first launched in 2005. The 5000th unit, a 3.28MW ES44AC, was delivered to United States Class I freight operator Union Pacific (UP) and is numbered 7964.
