The MyTix app can be downloaded to any device with a web-enabled iOS or Android operating system, and is available free-of-charge via Apple's App Store or the Google Play Store. The app allows passengers to purchase single tickets and monthly passes through their smartphone or tablet for journeys on the Hoboken – Spring Valley line, as well as between New York Penn Station and Meadowlands for special events.

NJ Transit says it chose the Pascack Valley line for the trial because the small customer base and consistent train crew allocation make it an ideal environment for testing. If the trial is successful, MyTix could be rolled out across all 12 of NJ Transit's commuter rail routes by the end of the year.

"The mobile ticketing app will give Pascack Valley customers, and eventually all of our rail customers, the ability to treat their smartphones as both a ticket vending machine and rail ticket or pass all-in-one, providing a seamless travel experience," says NJ Transit executive director Mr James Weinstein.
