A €1.5m grant will be used to conduct a feasibility study and environmental and social impact assessments for upgrading the 118km Tanta - El Mansoura - Damietta line, which forms part of the line connecting Cairo with the port of Damietta.

The project involves doubling the 65km El Mansoura - Damietta section, resignalling the entire line, improvements to stations and possibly a freight yard and link to the port.

The EIB has also signed a €1.2m technical assistance agreement with Egypt's National Authority for Tunnels to conduct a feasibility study to rehabilitate the 21.7km Cairo metro Line 2.

The study will determine what work is required to upgrade and renew systems, infrastructure and rolling stock to meet future traffic demand and extend the life of the system for another 25 years.

Hyundai Rotem won contracts to supply 54 trains for operation on Line 2 in 2018.
