THE regional government of Madrid has approved the acquisition of the lease on 684 metro cars currently in use on the Madrid Metro for €367m.

Madrid Metro says that by exercising the option to purchase the vehicles at the end of their lease period, it will be able to save more than €133.5m. The operating and maintenance lease agreements for 252 AnsaldoBreda series 9000 metro cars and 432 CAF Series 3000 metro cars, owned by Ferromovil 9000 and Ferromovil 3000 respectively, are due to expire on December 31 2023. The two fleets are already operating on up to nine lines on the Spanish capital’s metro network.

Madrid Metro will pay for the trains in two annual payments. The metro says that a technical assessment of the two fleets is positive and that it and the Regional Transport Consortium consider their purchase essential to maintain the quality of the service currently provided.
