The upgrading of the Budapest - Székesfehérvár line will continue this year with the doubling of the single track Kelenföld - Tárnok section, resignalling of Székesfehérvár station, and the installation of ETCS Level 2.

The reconstruction of the Kelenföld - Pusztaszabolcs line will begin, while work will continue on raising line speeds on the Szajol - Püspökladány and Gyoma - Lökösháza lines to 160km/h.

Planning will also begin for the reconstruction of Szolnok and Békéscsaba stations as well as the modernisation of the Györ - Boba - Hodoš and Budapest - Vácrátót - Vác lines. ETCS Level 2 will be installed on the Szajol - Püspökladány and Boba - Hodoš sections.

The government's decision to consolidate Forints 64bn ($US 284m) of MÁV's debts last year meant the railway ended 2011 with a Forints 14bn surplus. However, MÁV still has nearly Forints 250bn of debt still on its books.
